Mechanics: Rolling Basics
The basic dice roll in MuDD involves rolling a pool of dice and choosing which of them you want to represent your actions.
All rolls are made by determining which two Attributes the roll uses, combining the pools from them, and rolling the combined dice pool. From the rolled dice, choose two. The sum of the two chosen dice is the roll’s Precision, and the difference between them is the roll’s Impact. Both elements are necessary for an action to effect the desired change.
A roll's Precision determines if the action succeeds. Did the punch make contact? Were you able to bend the prince's ear for a moment? This value represents the precision with which you attempt your task.
A roll's Impact determines how much strength the action has. How much did the punch hurt? Were you able to convince the prince of the prophesy’s veracity? This value represents the force of your actions.
The values you need to roll to succeed will be determined by the GM and will largely depend on the circumstances of the encounter. However, some guidelines are important to remember. Higher thresholds for both Precision and Impact are more difficult to meet, and may be impossible if your Attribute dice pools are not strong enough. Also, even if your Precision is high enough, the Impact of your roll may not be sufficient to succeed. Note that, if the Impact of your roll is zero, your attempt automatically fails. This can happen if the two dice you choose both show the same number, or if your pool gets reduced to only one die. In that case, your Precision is the die result and your Impact is zero.
