Character Creation: Health

A character's ability to keep functioning despite taking a beating is represented by their health, and this is found by using the character's Endurance and Willpower Attributes.

A character's health has a few parts: Health Points (abbreviated as HP), Vital Points (VP), and Toughness. Health Points and Vital Points are lost as a character takes damage, and can be regained through healing of various types. A character's Toughness score reduces damage taken before it is subtracted from their HP.

To calculate HP, add the total number of dice in the character's Endurance and Willpower Attributes, and add to this the character's Tier level. To find Toughness, use the tier of the largest die in either the Endurance or Willpower Attributes. All characters have three VP.

Example: Frank's Endurance Attribute is d10/d6/d4 and his Willpower is d6/d4. He starts with three Vital Points, just like every character. His three dice in Endurance and two dice in Willpower give him five Health Points. He is an Everyman character (Tier 1), so that gives him one extra HP. His biggest die in either pool is the d10 in Endurance (a tier 4 die), so his Toughness is 4. When Frank takes a hit, he subtracts 4 from the damage dealt, then loses the remaining number of HP. If he loses all five of his HP he drops unconscious. Any further damage removes one VP per hit landed. Toughness can never reduce damage taken to Vital Points. If he loses all his VP, he dies!
